How to use it

Three steps, about a minute

1

Choose your image

Drop a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP into the tool above or pick it from your device. Nothing leaves this tab.

2

Pick the output format

PNG for transparency and sharp edges, JPG for photographs going somewhere you do not control, WebP for your own website, BMP only if something old asks for it.

3

Set the quality and download

The slider matters for JPG and WebP. Check the size and the saving printed under the preview, then save the file.

Questions

About this tool

It depends on where the picture is going, not on which format is smallest. JPG for photographs headed to an upload form or somebody else’s inbox, PNG for screenshots, logos and anything transparent, WebP for a website you control. There is a full guide with a three-question picker if you want to be sure.

Yes. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency becomes a solid colour — usually white. If the background needs to stay see-through, convert to PNG or WebP instead.

Converting to PNG or BMP is lossless, so nothing is discarded. Converting to JPG or WebP is lossy and discards some detail, which is what the quality slider controls. Convert once from the original rather than re-saving a file that has already been compressed.

Not currently — the input formats are PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP. On iOS you can set the camera to Most Compatible so photos are saved as JPG, or share the photo to yourself, which usually converts it on the way.

An animated GIF can go in, but only the first frame comes out, because PNG, JPG and BMP have no concept of animation. Converting an animation is a different job from converting an image.

Your file, your device

This tool is client-side. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or logged — closing the tab is all the cleanup there is.
